New State Energy Agency Announced

A new agency coordinating the state’s energy programs is now in place.

The Michigan Agency for Energy will focus on coordinating efforts and decisions as the state looks to replace retiring coal-fired power plants with newer, cleaner sources.

The agency was created through an executive order signed by Governor Snyder in March.

Valerie Brader, who has previously served as the governor’s deputy legal counsel and senior policy advisor, is executive director.

The 38-year old Brader will be the chief adviser to the governor and the directors of state departments regarding the development of energy policies and programs.

Several offices and functions in state government related to energy are now part of the new agency including the Michigan Energy Office.

However, the Public Service Commission will continue to operate autonomously from the agency.

The Michigan Agency for Energy is housed within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
