Houghton-Portage Township Schools are getting a greenhouse and garden.
The Board of Education unanimously voted to support the project, which was proposed by Sarah Geborkoff at Monday’s School Board meeting.
Geborkoff, a science teacher at Houghton Middle School, says she had the idea years ago and has been planning it since.
When she brought her proposal to the board, the initial costs of the project already had full funding by grants and donations.
The plan is to install a greenhouse as well as a pollinator garden and a vegetable garden in a courtyard at Houghton-Portage Township Schools.
The facility could be used by middle and high school students during the schools year as well as community organizations during summer months.
Benefits of this greenhouse and garden project include enhancement of the science curriculum and community involvement at the school including an annual plant sale.
Geborkoff hopes to begin installation of the Houghton-Portage Schools Greenhouse and Gardens project this April.
