We now have new Citizens of the Year and a new Strawberry Queen following this weekend’s packed Copper Country Strawberry Festival.
The awards went to Dorthey Behrend for Citizen of the Year and Marti Warren for Youth Citizen of the Year.
The strawberry auction saw trays of fresh picked strawberries selling for $300 and chocolate covered strawberries going for $250, the proceeds going to help support the Chassell Lions Club.
A dozen candidates for Strawberry Queen answered questions and walked the runway, but only one could wear the crown.
2013 Houghton High School graduate and Michigan State University student Maria Sliva was the winner.
The 1st Runner Up was Maya Braden, Samantha Verran was 2nd Runner Up and Shitaye Sam was the third runner up.
Ashley Boomer was named Miss Photogenic and Eden Klemett was named Miss Congeniality.
Crowds perused the wide variety of vendors and took rides aboard Michigan Tech’s science research vessel, the Agassiz.
The Chassell Fire Department and First Responders served up their famous Chicken Barbecue to hungry festival goers after the parade.
Derrick Verran was there helping to raise money for his department.
And for dessert, what else? More strawberry shortcake!
