You may soon be getting more alert messages on your cell phones.
The state House approved legislation that creates an alert system used by police to warn residents of a threat such as a mass shooting or terrorist attack.
The sponsor of the legislation, Brandt Iden of Oshtemo-near Kalamazoo, proposed the bills in response to the mass murder in Kalamazoo County in February.
The Threat Alert System will work similar to an Amber Alert, where notifications are sent to cell phones and broadcast on radio and television in the area affected by a threat.
The legislation now goes to the Senate for consideration.
