National Forest Service uses firebosses to contain the Summit Lake Fire

The Summit Lake Fire continues to grow. On Tuesday the National Forest Service reported an update to the incident, noting that forty-five additional acres have burned in the blaze. The fire grew most southwest toward the wilderness boundary around Evergreen Lake. Crews began dropping air tankers, called Firebosses, to stop the progression of the fire from crossing the boundary.

Smoke remains visible in localized areas and drifts northeast. No roads or structures are threatened by the incident. National Forest Service crews continue to monitor the situation and have worked in active areas to contain the fire using minimum suppression tactics. The fire was spotted Friday by aircraft and has grown since to consume 165 acres of forest. The fire is located in a remote section of the McCormick wilderness approximately 12 miles north of Lake Michigamme.
