May is National Bike Month and the Michigan Department of Transportation is now making 10 regional Road and Trail Bicycle Guides available for purchase online from the Michigan e-Store. Each map highlights roads suitable for bicycling, as well as regional trails, points of interest and destinations for bicyclists. The cost of each map is $5 to cover shipping and handling. The Michigan e-Store allows customers to purchase maps with a credit card and is part of the State of Michigan website. Officials say Michigan is a leader in the number of miles of developed shared-use pathway or rail-trails at more than 2,500 miles. Connecting these pathways are more than 2,000 miles of wide paved shoulders in rural areas and an increasing number of marked bicycle lanes in the urbanized areas.
