The Michigan Technological University Board of Trustees has approved three new degree programs.
At its regular meeting in Houghton this morning, the board greenlighted a master of science in mechatronics, a master’s in engineering management and a bachelor of science in cybersecurity.
Mechatronics integrates electrical and mechanical engineering, robotics, software and computational hardware in the design of products and processes. The master’s in engineering management is a hybrid technical/business degree program designed for engineering- and technology-intensive industries. The undergraduate degree in cybersecurity will provide students with technical cybersecurity skills and knowledge, along with an understanding of the social, ethical, legal and policy aspects of cybersecurity.
Board members also voted to create a Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology within the College of Engineering
The Board approved a $217-million operating budget for fiscal year 2020 – that’s a $3.5-million increase over 2019. Tuition and fees for in-state undergrads will rise by 2 percent. Non-resident undergrad tuition and fees will rise 4.4 percent, graduate tuition will increase 6 percent, and room and board rates will go up 2.3 percent.
Brenda Ryan will chair the board for the 2020 fiscal year, with Bill Johnson vice chair, and Susan Kerry as treasurer. The board granted professor emeritus status to John Beard (mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics), David Hand (civil and environmental engineering) and David Nitz (physics).
