Northern Michigan University will be building a new Welcome Center. The building will be underwritten by a donation from Dr. John Beaumier. NMU President Fritz Erickson said preparatory work will begin this summer, but construction probably won’t start until next summer. The first step will be to decide where on campus the building will be placed. Once completed, it will provide a central place for people to get information about the university. It will also house the Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center, a museum that preserves the history and culture of the U.P.
Michigan Tech recently opened a similar facility. The John Edgar McAllister Welcome Center
was built into – and onto – the Memorial Union Building.
