More Than Two Dozen Accidents In Houghton Since Snowstorm

At the January 27th meeting of the Houghton City Council, city manager Eric Waara gave an update on snow removal.  He says the teams have been working efficiently and hopefully will be ready for the next heavy snowfall.

Police Chief John Donnelly reported 166 calls to service since the last council meeting on January 13th.  He says that though the winter road conditions are reducing the number of speeding tickets, there have been 27 accidents reported since the last meeting.

Donnelly also assures there will be police present at Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival All-Nighter on February 3rd to assist with crowd control.

The council has set 3 public hearings for February 10th.

The first is a public hearing for Rental Licenses at 505 West Edwards Avenue.

A second hearing on the same night is for a proposed ordinance to require the Council’s Rules of Procedure to be created by resolution instead of additional ordinances.

The third public hearing set for February 10th is for a proposed ordinance to amend a section of the Houghton City Code.

The amendment includes adding a line to the code which allows surplus property to be sold to another municipality without bidding.

The Houghton City Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.
