More Than 20 Schools Get Sexual Assault Prevention Grants

Over 20 universities, colleges and community colleges will benefit from a special program designed to reduce sexual assault on campuses in Michigan.

Finlandia University and Michigan Technological University are among them.

The schools will share $500,000 under the Campus Sexual Assault Grant Program, as part of Michigan First Lady, Sue Snyder’s “Inform. Empower. Prevent. Let’s End Campus Sexual Assault.” initiative, which aims to change the overall culture of sexual assault among the college-age population.

Finlandia will receive $15,000 in funds and Michigan Tech will receive $17,746.

The schools were selected from 33 applications seeking more than $1.6 million in funding.

The Michigan legislature appropriated $500,000 for the program earlier this year.

The chosen projects include those that foster collaboration, involve multiple entities working together, focus on new, innovative ideas and encourage student involvement.

They also include plans to implement enhanced bystander training programs, place emphasis on student participation, encourage collaboration with local bars and businesses, and create networks aiming to improve access to assault prevention resources.
