Police across the state have stepped up efforts this holiday period as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
Melody Kindraka of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says more local and state police will be on the roads looking out for drunken drivers this week, with the enforcement period running through January 1st.
Kindraka says the goal of the campaign is to get people to drive safe, which includes doing things like designating a driver, wearing a seatbelt and checking road conditions before heading out.
There were 27 traffic fatalities during the 2014 Christmas/New Year’s enforcement period.
Five of those were alcohol related. Nine people killed were not wearing seat belts.
