State officials say 18 health insurance companies are seeking inclusion in the federally-run Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace in 2015, five more than participated last year. All but two of the companies submitted plans for the individual market and 11 offered plans for the small group market. Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services Director Ann Flood says increased competition helps keep premiums lower and provides more choice for Michiganders. The Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace will continue to be administered by the federal government while the agency retains the responsibility of reviewing all plans to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. Open enrollment for the Marketplace will begin November 15 with coverage effective on January 1, 2015.
