A Houghton County man was sentenced to 324 months in jail for his role in the distribution of methamphetamine in the Upper Peninsula. Gregory James Knuuttila of Mohawk was sentenced by the U.S. District Court of West Michigan earlier today by the Honorable Janet T Neff. Knuuttila was sentenced to 324 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine above 50 grams. U.S. Attorney Mark Totten says that Methamphetamine continues to persist as an issue within the state, often having devastating effects on a person’s life.
Knuuttila was arrested in July 2022 after being pulled over during a traffic stop as he drove through Ontonagon County. During the UPSET team’s search of the vehicle, officers found more than 200 grams of Meth. Judge Neff said that his actions made Knuuttila a “menace to the Upper Peninsula”. Beyond distributing methamphetamine, it was found during the trial that he directed the use of violence against others to collect debts, had attempted to obstruct justice, and attempted to smuggle drugs into prison. Knuuttila’s criminal career lasted from 1996 to 2022. Those interested in learning more about Knuutila’s sentencing can find more details here.
