MMA Regulations Signed Into Law By Governor

Michigan is no longer one of the few states with unregulated amateur Mixed Martial Arts fights, after the governor signed bills into law Thursday setting up rules and regulations for fighters and promoters to follow.

The new law will set up weight classes for fighters and require promoters to schedule fair fights.

State Representative Harvey Santana sponsored one of the bills and says, with no rules in place, promoters have been putting fighters in danger by creating lopsided fight cards in hopes of filling arenas.

It also requires fighters to register with the state and go through a pre-fight screening – which includes a blood test and a pregnancy test for female fighters.

The law also adds some teeth to the state’s Unarmed Combat Commission, which oversees both MMA and boxing.
