A huge construction project is being undertaken by the Keweenaw ATV Club along with the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club this summer.
Over 340 different construction sites totaling over $8 million so far to repair the trail between Dollar Bay and Lake Linden (AKA Trail 3). The trail hasn’t seen tourism since the Fathers Day Flood five years ago.
“Well it’s about over about eight and a half million [dollars] now and there’s still two projects left to turn out to bids- that haven’t been bid out yet. I’m guessing it’s going to be around ten million [dollars] by the time we get through with the trail. So, that’s a heck of a chunk of change for a seven mile stretch but it serves Lake Linden, Hubbell, Mason, Dollar Bay, Ripley, and Hancock.” – Mike McMahon
An informal statement from Visit Keweenaw from December estimated that the one trail represents about $900,000 per year. See the full story here.
President of the Keweenaw ATV Club, Daryl St. John, and Trail Coordinator for the Keweenaw ATV Club, Mike McMahon, expressed their need for help to keep the trails maintained with new volunteers, particularly younger members.
Local construction companies have bid on and received project sites on the trail. B&B Contracting Calumet bid over $3 million. DP Construction, Bacco Construction, and Blue Line Site Solutions all bid over $1 million each. This will bring money into the local economy.
