Millage Increase Would Provide Funding For Recreation Capital Improvements

Hancock residents will be asked to decide the fate of a millage increase to fund recreation capital improvements.

Recreation Commission’s John Haeussler recommended the city council ask for a 0.8 of one mill increase on the November ballot at their monthly meeting Wednesday.

The revenue generated would then be designated for improving recreational activities within the city.

The council also discussed the Quincy Streetscape project and how it’s affecting downtown businesses.

Deborah Mann serves as a liaison between the city of Hancock and the business district. She says things have gone quite well for businesses in the early goings.

The public is encouraged to rally behind the businesses in downtown Hancock to help support them during the road reconstruction project.

Hancock City Manager Glenn Anderson says the city is dealing with eight water leaks caused by pressure surges following Sunday’s water main break in Adams Township.

Anderson said residents may still see some discoloration in their water and recommendations have been to let it run a short while until it clears up.

Hancock has about a three-day reserve of water within their system, so Sunday’s water main break wasn’t likely going to cause a loss of water service to residents.

In other business, the city council approved a grant application submittal for three new transit buses in the amount of about $225,000.

The council also gave the go ahead on the purchase of a new pumper truck for the fire department for $280,000.

The discussion of the Waste Management bid for garbage pickup and curbside recycling was tabled until their June meeting to give the committee more time to review it.
