Michigan ranked highest in the nation in political spending on Michigan Supreme Court campaigns last year.
That’s according to a report released Thursday.
It was issued by Justice at Stake, the Brennan Center for Justice and the national Institute on Money in State Politics.
The report said eight candidates spent just over $9.5 millionin 2014. There were three open seats on the state’s highest court last year.
Michigan was also first in judicial candidate fundraising, $4.98 million, and outside spending $4.53 million.
And Michigan was one of only two states where average spending per state Supreme Court seat topped $3 million.
Justice at Stake is calling for merit selection of judges, where the governor chooses a nominee, as a way to help get the money out of judicial elections.
