Michigan State Police Ask To Remove “Policewoman” Rank

Legislation to eliminate the Michigan State Police rank of Policewoman has cleared a state Senate committee.

MSP Director, Col. Kriste Kibbey-Etue told the Senate Judiciary Committee Policewoman is an outdated title and she would like to see it removed from statute.

Bill sponsor, Senate Republican Tonya Shuitmaker of Lawton says the title harkens back to a time when women were paid less then men in the MSP.

She says it’s time to recognize that women are working in the same capacity as men.

The bill now heads to the full Senate.
