Michigan Firearms Deer Season Underway

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says nearly 600,000 hunters are out on their quest for whitetail deer across Michigan.

Chad Stewart of the DNR says license sales are down about three percent compared to last season, he expects the activity to be about the same in the woods.

Stewart says there is localized concern after chronic wasting disease was reported in Ingham County and deer heads should be checked in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties, but that is not a factor statewide.

He does say hunters are encouraged to have deer heads checked for Bovine T.B. in Northeastern Lower Michigan, where that

disease has been a concern in recent years.

As always, Stewart says hunters are reminded that they are required to wear some form of blaze orange clothing while in the woods, also to use common sense and practice safety, know what they are shooting at, don’t transport loaded weapons in vehicles, know the law for baiting and feeding deer and obey no trespassing signs.

Michigan’s firearms season runs each day just after sunrise until just after sundown. It ends on Sunday, November 30th.
