The Michigan 2022 deer hunting season has wrapped up, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has some highlights from the past year. For the first time hunters were required to report harvests. Michigan joined many other states in requiring harvest reports, due to years of declining reports made by hunters. The state needs these crucial reports in order to have a more complete outlook on the health of the state’s deer population. To support the program Michigan DNR launched their Hunting and Fishing app, where hunters and anglers can purchase licenses, make reports, and receive updates from the department. The DNR says that 83 percent of hunters were able to successfully complete their harvest report in under five minutes. Hunters license purchases were down just one percent this year, and the first year of online reports concluded with over 300,000 deer harvested, about 56 percent were antlered deer. Unsurprising most deer in the state were taken during firearm season. Over the coming months the DNR will analysis all of the data gathered from this past year in comparison to previous harvests, and work on the post-season survey.
