The Michigan After-school Partnership applauds the state’s recent 50 Million Dollar Investment in Out-of-School Time Programs. Recently Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced 50 million dollars in grant awards supporting afterschool, out-of-school time, and summer leaning programming in Michigan.
Three of the organizations benefiting from the state’s investment in youth programming include intermediate school districts in Mackinac, Menominee, and Ontonagon counties. The Eastern Upper Peninsula ISD in Mackinaw County will receive 387,000 dollars. Menominee Intermediate School District will receive 144,000 dollars from the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Ptoential. The third intermediate school district in the Upper Peninsula set to receive funds includes the Gogebic-Ontonagon ISD, which will receive 89,600 dollars.
Grant fund from MiLEAP for afterschool, and summer youth programming will support afterschool and summer programs making up for childcare gaps in the state. Across Michigan parents report the gap between work and school schedules can average around 25 hours per week of unsupervised time for children. Parents also note that a priority when determining afterschool or childcare programs includes access to nutritious food.
