Michigan ranks as the most expensive state in the nation to own and operate a car, according to a new report.
24/7 Wall St. ranked states based on the cost of gas, repairs and maintenance and car insurance premiums.
Michigan topped the list at a total operating cost of $4,678, with much of that cost due to the state’s high insurance premiums.
Pete Kuhnmuench of the Insurance Institute of Michigan blames the state’s no fault law and unlimited medical coverage for higher premiums.
He says Michigan also lacks limits on medical services and treatments.
24/7 Wall St. says Michigan’s average insurance premium is $2,476, the most expensive in the country.
