While Michigan and 14 other states saw their unemployment rates go down from July to August, Michigan still tied with two other states for the fifth highest adjusted unemployment rate among the 50 states. The figures come from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Michigan’s jobless rate in August was 7.4 percent. That tied with both California and Tennessee. Two dozen states saw their unemployment rates increase during the period and 11 others saw no change. According to the Gongwer News Service, among the Great Lakes states, Michigan did have the highest unemployment rate. Georgia had the highest jobless rate in the nation during August, at 8.1 percent.
