Figures from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show there is increasing numbers of unvaccinated children in kindergarten in Michigan, making the state the fourth-highest in terms of parents who have not gotten their kids immunized against a number of infectious diseases. The CDC survey showed that 5.4 percent of Michigan parents with kindergarten-aged children had not had them vaccinated during the 2013-14 school year. That was up 0.1 percent from the year before. It was also up 1.6 percent from the 3.8 percent of parents who refused to have their children vaccinated in the 2009-10 school year. Michigan allows parents greater leeway to refuse to have their children vaccinated for religious and philosophical reasons. The report said despite overwhelming scientific evidence that vaccines are safe for children, some parents remain worried that the substances in vaccines can cause autism or other health problems for their children.
