The Michigan House has approved a pair of bills changing the way you’ll vote in 2016.
One bill would eliminate straight-ticket voting, meaning you couldn’t check a box for Democrat or Republican and be done with it.
A second bill would allow people to vote absentee without giving a reason.
Democrats say doing away with straight-ticket voting will make for long lines on Election Day, specifically at urban polling places.
Under the no-reason absentee legislation, anyone could go to their county clerk’s office, request an absentee ballot, show their ID and either vote on the spot or later at home.
Republicans hope that will offset the potential for long lines at the polls.
Both measures now move to the Senate.
The legislation is tie-barred meaning both have to pass the legislature and be signed into law or neither becomes law.
