MI Groups Disagree on Impact of Proposed Federal Emissions Plan

Business and environmental groups disagree on how a proposed federal plan to cut emissions will impact Michigan.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan calls for reducing carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

Jason Geer of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce says this will increase energy costs.

And he says those higher costs could entice manufacturers to move out of the country.

But Regina Strong of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign says the change could actually create jobs.

She says the new rules would mean a greater need for renewable energy, which could be produced in Michigan and create jobs.

The plan, proposed by the Obama administration, requires states to comply with the new rules by 2022.
