Michigan has won an award – for its rumble strips.
The Roadway Safety Foundation and the Federal Highway Administration has recognized Michigan’s efforts to reduce run-off-the-road and fatal crashes caused by people drifting out of their lane.
Research has shown that nearly half of all crashes were caused by lane departure.
So the state has been installing rumble strips on all non-freeway high-speed rural roads managed by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Following that effort, crashes declined by 47 percent and fatal crashes by 51 percent.
Michigan was one of 10 states recognized by officials this week for road safety efforts.
