Michigan high schools averaged about three sports-related concussions per school in the fall, according to preliminary data from the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).
MHSAA spokesman, John Johnson, says 744, or 99-percent, of its high school members submitted numbers at the end of the fall sports season.
The data shows there were 3.2 concussions per school through December 4th.
Johnson says football accounted for 79-percent of all concussions for the season, with soccer coming in second with 11-percent of the reported concussions. 27-percent of high schools reported no athlete concussions.
Johnson says this is the first year the MHSAA has collected data on frequency and severity of sports head injuries.
He says they will continue to collect information and hope to use it to make the games safer for athletes.
