Medical Marijuana Bills Overwhelmingly Clear the Michigan House

A series of bills impacting medical marijuana users and dispensaries in-waiting have cleared a first hurdle, overwhelming passing the Michigan House Wednesday.

One bill would set rules and tiered regulatory system to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the state.

State Representative Mike Callton, R-Nashville, is sponsoring that bill and says local governments have the option to allow dispensaries to open in their community.

The bill would also require dispensaries to pay a 3 percent tax and people buying medical marijuana to pay the state’s 6 percent sales tax.

Another bill would allow edible forms of medical marijuana for those who don’t want to smoke it.

A third creates a program to track medical marijuana from the time it’s planted to when it’s sold.
