Michigan State Senator Ed McBroom and Wisconsin State Senator Tom Tiffany met recently with business operators in the western Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin to discuss problems with railroad service.
McBroom says he’s heard from a lot of businesses and communities that would like to do more with rail.
Forest products and mining are the principal users of rail service in the U.P., but McBroom says other increased manufacturing opportunities could be facilitated with better rail resources, including agriculture and finished wood products.
McBroom and Tiffany plan to meet with federal officials to relay local concerns.
Most of the Keweenaw Peninsula’s rail lines were removed years ago. Rail service still extends into Baraga County.
