Man falls through ice near Stanton Township Beach

Deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department were able to rescue a man who fell through the ice near Stanton Township Beach. The call came in around 8:15 Sunday night. When personnel arrived, they found the 22-year-old from Macomb clinging to the break wall, but above water. Another man was attempting to rescue him and was standing on top of the break wall.

With the assistance of a Conservation Officer from the Michigan DNR, the submerged man was pulled onto the break wall with a rope. It was then used as a guide to help both men walk along the icy, slippery path back to solid ground. The 22-year-old was treated for hypothermia at the scene and taken by ambulance to UP Health Systems Portage.

Mercy EMS, the Ice Rescue Team from Houghton Fire Department, and Stanton Township First Responders also assisted the deputies.
