Mackinac Bridge Reopened After Falling Ice Causes Closure

Traffic is running smoothly again across the Mackinac Bridge.

Officials had to close the bridge for several hours on Saturday due to falling ice.

Warmer temperatures and increased sun had loosened ice that formed on the bridge’s towers and cables, causing some of it to fall on the driving lanes below.

With the ice falling more the 300 feet, it poses a danger to motorists.

In the past 20 years, the bridge has closed eight times for falling ice.

The duration of the closures has ranged from 37 minutes up to two hours 55 minutes, with the average closure lasting just under two hours.

Saturday’s closure lasted more than three hours.
