It’s a situation that all of us hope will never happen in the Copper Country, but if a gunman is loose in the area, local law enforcement are taking steps to be ready.
During his report to the Houghton City Council at Wednesday’s regular meeting, Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly said about 30 officers are taking part in Active Shooter Training this week.
It’s a program that the department has participated in for the last several years.
To prepare for different scenarios, the location of the training is constantly changing.
The officers have been training on the campus of Michigan Tech but Donnelly expects they will move on to the Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools as early as today.
Donnelly said some officers have already been through additional training and he was amazed how much they stand out above the rest of the officers who have not had it.
