A young girl is fortunate to be alive after falling into the Ontonagon River over the weekend.
A trooper from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post was called out to Elmer Park in the Village of Ontonagon on Friday.
The girl, said to be between 10 and 12 years old, had slipped off the boardwalk and fallen into the river.
Because of the ice buildup on shore, she was unable to get out without help.
The girl was in the water for several minutes before help arrived.
A man out walking his dog found the girl semi-conscious and called 911.
When police arrived, she was showing symptoms of severe hypothermia so she was taken to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital for treatment.
The girl had a dangerously low internal body temperature and medical personnel said if not for the quick response of the man and the officer, she would not have survived much longer.
