Deputies from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the accident around 11:30am on US 41 near Copper City Road.
A Chevrolet Blazer driven by a 23-year-old Laurium man was heading northbound on US-41 at a high rate of speed when it rear ended a Buick LeSabre, driven by a 57-year-old man from Calumet. The crash propelled the Buick off the side of the road where it struck a tree.
A passenger in the Buick, a 63-year-old Calumet woman, was extricated from the vehicle by Calumet Township First Responders and taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy Ambulance. She was then airlifted to Aspirus Wausau Hospital where she was listed in critical condition. The Calumet man was treated for his injuries at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. His condition was not reported.
The driver of the Blazer was uninjured. He was arrested and taken to jail.
Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Assisting at the scene was Allouez Township Fire and First Responders, Ahmeek Village Fire Department, Calumet Fire Department, and the Michigan State Police.
