Winter Carnival Queen Coronation Is Saturday

Brains and beauty–with a healthy heaping of talent–will all be on display on the stage this Saturday night at the Rozsa Center as the major Winter Carnival events begin with the Queen’s Coronation.  The theme of this year’s carnival is “Years of  Innovation STEM from this Snowy Situation!”

Michigan Tech’s Blue Key Honor Society President Dan Schundlich says the eight contestants have had to do a lot already to make it to this point.  “The competition really starts well before you actually see the competition on stage,” he said.  “They had more than eight people apply and the only eight finalists make it in.”

Before a queen can be crowned, the contestants must take part in a talent competition, a question and answer portion, and more.  In addition to a getting a partial scholarship, the winner will ride the Zamboni during Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival hockey games at the SDC and take part in other ceremonious activities.

Schundlich said, “There’s different events throughout the year that they help out with so it’s really an exciting time for them.”

Last year’s Winter Carnival Queen Cora Taylor will be emceeing the event on Saturday and this year’s Winter Carnival Queen will present the MVP Award on the ice after the hockey game next weekend.

The coronation is open to the public.  Read the bios of the queen candidates at https://www.mtu.edu/carnival/2019/ and find ticket information at https://events.mtu.edu/event/winter_carnival_queens_coronation#.XFMUBPlKgdV
