Whitmer Addresses COVID Concerns in the Copper Country

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer admits that we’re all fed up with the COVID-19 pandemic…

“We’re all getting tired of masks. We’re all getting tired of not spending time close together with our loved ones. And, yet, we also know that, while we are making progress on a lot of measurements, COVID-19 is still a very real threat.”

It’s that concern that brought her to the heart of one of Michigan’s hottest COVID-19 outbreaks here in the Keweenaw Peninsula this morning. After meeting with local health officials, Whitmer stressed the importance of taking immediate steps to reign the virus back in…

“We want to keep our economy engaged. We don’t want to make steps backward, and that’s why we’ve got to get our arms around this virus now.”

And, while she can’t rule out the prospect of the U.P. being rolled back into Phase Four, she’s hoping outbreaks can be addressed more surgically…

“If the spread is happening in a large part in bars, or at weddings and events where people are congregating, then we need to take action specifically in those parts.”

The steps to keep ourselves and our neighbors healthy and our businesses open remain the same…

“Wearing a mask remains the single most important tool that we have; washing your hands; physically distancing.”

After all…

“The virus isn’t going to go away just because we’re sick of it.”

Whitmer promised to stay in touch with local health officials, and provide assistance as needed.
