Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Re-Issues Advisory to Ripley Residents

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department  has reissued a warning to residents in Ripley.

Particularly, those who reside in the area of the Julio Scrapyards.

Kate Beer, Western Upper Peninsula Health Department.

The advisory was issued  last summer, when state agencies conducted tests and took ground samples, and discovered the area to be polluted with various chemical and physical hazards, including asbestos that could cause illness or injury to people using the trails.

Residents are advised to avoid the ORV Trail, as ATV’s and other trail users can agitate the soil, sending asbestos particles into the air.

Residents are also advised to stay clear of the Julio Contracting Office in Ripley.

Mitigation efforts by the state are planned for portions of the area this Summer.
