In recent weeks, Houghton County has seen a sharp increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases including 37 new cases since Monday.
Some of the cases can be traced back to Michigan Tech, but within the last two days an elementary school teacher and a high school teacher from the Houghton-Portage Township School District have also been diagnosed.
In both instances, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department determined students were at minimal risk for exposure.
Kate Beer, Health Officer for the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, commented on the recent increase in cases.
