Houghton, Michigan— Portage Lake United Church (PLUC), with the help of Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) and other funds are able to help support the Angel Mission because of their Wagner Endowment.
New Beginnings Angel Mission is a free store in Calumet. The organization aims to help members of the community by providing quality items such as clothing, housewares, bedding, etc. to those in need. Angel Mission is supported primarily by the Presbyterian Church Conference in our region and donations from Portage Lake United Church.
PLUC has two other KCF endowments that have provided support for over 20 years. The newly established Wagner Endowment was once the John M. and Clara B. Wagner Memorial Fund which was invested through a bank trust department. With proof of the high cost of fees through bank investment, the Houghton County Probate Court approved the transfer of its assets to an irrevocable endowment at KCF. While the process was lengthy, including an approval from the Michigan Attorney General’s office, the Portage Lake United Church is now able to do far more with its funds thanks to the current endowment at KCF.
The transfer of the Wagner Trust to Keweenaw Community Foundation was made primarily to increase its net annual earnings, which (as stipulated in the Trust) will be used to provide additional support to the mission activities of the PLUC.
Tax deductible contributions may be made to the Portage Lake United Church endowment online at www.keweenawgives.org. All contributions to a permanent endowment at KCF qualify for a Federal Tax Credit. To learn more about PLUC, please visit their website at https://pluc.org.
