Houghton still has a long way to go to restore damage caused by the Father’s Day Flood in June, 2018.
City Manager Eric Waara provided the city council with an update at last night’s meeting.
Waara explained that two federal agencies are providing money for repairs. The Federal Highway Administration is funding $2.4 million worth of repairs. The city must provide 20 percent matching funds. $702,000 of the work is finished, with $1.8 million still pending.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is covering $2.2 million worth of repairs. The city is off the hook on the 25 percent match required for that work… [WAARA B].
Waara said that $842,000 of the FEMA work has been completed, with $1.3 million remaining.
Most of the remaining work will be bid over the winter, and completed next summer.
Major projects remaining include the Sharon Avenue culvert just east of Memorial Drive, which was repaired temporarily immediately after the flood, but needs a permanent replacement. The Ridge Road leachgate system needs to be replaced – that collects runoff from a former landfill, and diverts it into the sanitary sewer system for treatment. Other projects include the Nara boardwalk, a final paving on Agate Street, pavement replacement at Kestner Waterfront Park and the city campground, and numerous other paving jobs.
