A Victorian Christmas Celebrated In Houghton

Keweenaw residents took a step back in time over the weekend as the City of Houghton held its first Victorian Christmas.

There’s snow on the ground and the feel of Christmas in the air in downtown Houghton as many dressed for the occasion and joined in on the celebration.

“We’re having a wonderful time here in Houghton providing some hot chocolate, some carolers, and raising some funds for the work of the Salvation Army in the Houghton-Hancock area,” said Major Tim Meyer of the Salvation Army, who spent the afternoon greeting folks with warm drinks and playing trumpet.

City sidewalks are lined with Christmas carolers gathered around the fire, local businesses are open for holiday shopping and the people here seem unaffected by the cold temperatures.

Leonita Schweigert of the Salvation Army commends Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department for organizing the event.

Schweigert said, “This event is kind of like an old-fashioned Christmas from the 1910’s. It came about by Lt Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department. He wanted to help the Salvation Army along with just bringing people together from the community.”

In addition to free hot chocolate and horse drawn sleigh rides, the City Center also opened up its doors for people to come in, warm up and have snacks and hot sandwiches–all provided by the city, a gesture that’s typical of warm Houghton hospitality.

It’s expected that the city will adopt its Victorian Christmas as an annual event.
