Velat Encouraged by MHSAA Adaptive Competition Expansion

The recent decision by the Michigan High School Athletic Association to add four adaptive sports events to its track and field tournaments and another swimming event came as welcome news to one Houghton High School student.

Maria Velat has been lobbying for expanded opportunities for disabled athletes. She says the move is a good first step…

That’s really great progress, and it sets up a division so disabled athletes can also compete alongside their teammates, and score points for their team.

Work continues to find ways to involve other sports, to expand the number of track and field options, and involve athletes with other physical challenges…

Right now, it looks like it’s only wheelchair athletes, but we’d also like ambulatory athletes, like those with prosthetics, to compete.

Velat hopes to take advantage of the opportunity herself…

Last year, I couldn’t compete at regionals or finals, so I think being able to compete at those will just make the whole track experience more enjoyable.

Velat’s mobility has been limited since she suffered from transverse myelitis, which damages the nerves in the spinal cord.
