UPEC to Host 11th Annual Celebrate The UP! Event in Marquette

Those passionate about the Upper Peninsula and its pristine environment will gather in Marquette this month for a special event.

The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition will be hosting their 11th annual Celebrate the UP! Event March 29th and 30th.

UPEC’s Kathleen Heideman says the event will feature music, art, and breakout sessions that focus on topics related to protecting the outdoors.

“Michigan is so rich in natural resources, there can be a flip side where as soon as you have an incredible resource, there are threats to it and the more you look, the more stewardship is required,” said Heideman.

A kickoff event with a Yooper Reggae band will be held Friday and Saturday’s keynote speaker is Dave Dempsey, who will give a talk titled “The Sixth Great Lake.”

Heideman said, “If you added up all the ground water in Michigan, we’ve got enough water to make another Great Lake, and that is kind of out of a lot of people’s awareness.  It’s in the ground and we don’t think about it as such an incredible natural resource.”

All of the sessions are free and open to the public.
