A second major Upper Peninsula sled dog race has been canceled because of poor trail conditions.
The U.P. 200, along with its companion Midnight Run and Jack Pine 30, have been called off after a night of rain, followed by freezing temperatures.
Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association president Darlene Walch said safety is the race’s top priority, and it would be irresponsible to expect mushers and their teams to use the treacherous trails. Read her full statement here.
The race was scheduled to begin tomorrow. It’s the first cancellation in the event’s 33-year history. Some social events planned in Marquette and Grand Marais will still take place.
Last month, the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race was also canceled, after warm weather produced dangerous trail conditions.
The CopperDog 150 and its associated races on the Keweenaw Peninsula are still scheduled to take place the first weekend in March.
Ironically, this year was to be the debut of the Superior Crown sled dog series, with cash prizes for mushers who participated and did well in the Tahquamenon, Marquette, and Copper Country races.
