Unemployment Rate Improves in U.P.

More Michigan workers have found jobs this fall.

Figures released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed that employment levels increased in all 17 Michigan labor markets from August to September.

The statewide unadjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent, compared to 4.0 percent in August, and 5.2 percent a year ago.

The unadjusted rate does not take into account typical fluctuations that occur seasonally.

In the Upper Peninsula, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.3 percent – a half percent better than in August. Five hundred workers were added to U.P. payrolls.

Houghton County’s unemployment rate stood at 4.0 percent. Baraga County was at 6.0 percent, Ontonagon County at 6.2 percent, and Keweenaw County at 5.2 percent.
