U.P. Unemployment Rate Eases Upward

More Upper Peninsula workers had jobs in July than in June, but a bigger increase in the number of enrolled workers pushed the unemployment rate slightly higher.

The 5.8 percent rate across the peninsula is not seasonally adjusted. June’s rate was 5.5 percent. Officials with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget said the increase is typical for this time of year. It was also identical to the statewide rate. The July 2023 rate stood at 5.0 percent.

Mackinac County had the state’s lowest rate, at 3.7 percent – typical for the county in which many people work in the summer tourism industry. The highest rate was in Oscoda County, at 8.3 percent.

In our area, Houghton County’s 5.6 percent rate was slightly better than the state average. Other local counties came in higher – Keweenaw County at 6.5 percent, Baraga County at 7.1 percent, and Ontonagon County at 8.0 percent.
