In a summer that brought record-breaking heat to much of the nation, the Upper Peninsula’s weather was just slightly warmer and drier than average.
Statistics compiled by the National Weather Service office in Marquette show 10 of their 11 official monitoring sites with above-average temperatures. Only Sault Ste. Marie finished slightly below average. The rest ranged from 0.3 to 1.5 degrees above normal.
At the Houghton County Memorial Airport, temperatures from June through August averaged 0.9 degree above average. Houghton was also the driest reporting station, with just 5.74” of rain recorded. By contrast, Iron Mountain received twice that amount. Houghton also recorded the highest daily temperature in the U.P. when the thermometer hit 98 degrees on June 20th.
