U.P.-Only Natural Resources Commission Proposed

State Representative Greg Markkanen has officially proposed that the Upper Peninsula be given its own Natural Resources Commission…

We just feel that the NRC from downstate, coming from Ann Arbor, Detroit, are just totally out of touch with what’s going on across the U.P.

Markkanen says the idea has been under discussion for some time, both in Lansing, and here in the U.P…

There’s a lot of disgruntled hunters out there, and rightly so, because I think a lot of the area of the U.P. has not been managed correctly.

The latest issue is the new requirement that hunters report all deer kills online within three days. Markkanen says officials downstate don’t understand the limited cell and internet service at remote U.P. hunting camps…

It’s just not realistic for the U.P. hunters, and, you know, the DNR claims they need all this data for management, well, I think there’s better ways to get that information.

Failure to file the report, including exact location, type of weapon used, and other details, would result in a misdemeanor offense.

Legislation that would prevent the NRC from requiring the reports was approved by the Michigan House last week, and will now be considered by the Senate.

The proposed bill to establish the U.P. Natural Resources Commission been referred to the House Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Committee for consideration.
