The Upper Peninsula celebrated its nominal 183rd birthday Saturday.
On December 14th, 1836, Michigan territorial leaders meeting at Ann Arbor agreed to accept the compromise in which Michigan gained the Upper Peninsula, and gave up claims to the Toledo Strip.
The meeting on a frigid day in a poorly heated room has since become known as the “Frostbitten Convention.”
At a birthday party at the Marquette Regional History Center Saturday, historian Jane Ryan said Michiganders thought they were getting a bad deal, and had actually rejected the idea at a previous meeting…
But, with statehood on the line, delegates reconsidered, and soon realized they’d gotten the better of the deal…
Happy birthday to us!
